THE HISTORY OF MEDITATION MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH
“AND I SAY ALSO UNTO THEE, THOU ART PETER, AND UPON THIS ROCK I WILL BUILD MY CHURCH; AND THE GATES OF HELL SHALL NOT PREVAIL AGAINST IT.” MATTHEW 16:18
With these words in mind and being lead by the Holy Spirit, Rev. Robert L. Holding started a mission on May 4, 1975 at 5841 Oregon St., Detroit, Michigan. Meditation Missionary Baptist Church was organized on Sunday, June 1, 1975.
Rev. Holding was doing a tremendous job as Pastor. He had high hopes and always thought positive. Under his leadership, he organized the Missionary Society on September 29, 1975 and the Gospel Choir in July 1976. On the morning of October 18, 1976, the Lord chose to take Rev. Holding unto himself. The church was devastated and went into mourning for 30 days.
On October 30, 1976, it was moved and seconded that Rev. Tommie W. Wade carry on the duties of the pastor until the general church meeting.
In October 2014, Rev. Robert J. Coverson, Pastor Emeritus of Second Chapel Hill Missionary Baptist Church accepted the call of being our Interim Pastor until a new Pastor was called. At the December 2014 general church meeting, it was voted to accept Rev. Coverson as our new Pastor. He was officially installed on Sunday, January 25, 2015. Rev. Dr. Larry Smith, Pastor of New. St. Mark Baptist Church officiated the service and Rev. Dr. Larry Walker, Pastor of Oakland Avenue Missionary Baptist Church brought the installation message.
Under Rev. Coverson’s leadership, a brotherhood was organized to assist with the upkeep of the church building, 3 classrooms were built for the Sunday School, 8 lots of land were purchased, and the kitchen was updated. Within the last year, we have begun working on our Hope House which will be used as part of our outreach ministry to assist the community.
